Tool Maker | Wayland, MI

Salary Range: $60,000 - $92,000 depending on experience

Key Responsibilities

• Design, fabricate, and assemble precision tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures.
• Perform maintenance, repair, and modification of existing tooling.
• Operate and program conventional and CNC machine tools (lathes, mills, grinders, EDM).
• Interpret complex blueprints, schematics, and engineering specifications.
• Conduct precision measurements using various metrology instruments to ensure quality and accuracy.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose tooling performance issues to optimize production efficiency.
• Collaborate with engineering and production teams on tool design and improvement projects.

Recommended Qualifications

• Completion of a formal Tool & Die Maker apprenticeship program or 5+ years of relevant experience.
• Proficiency in operating conventional and CNC machine tools (lathes, mills, grinders, EDMs).
• Ability to read and interpret complex engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Expertise in using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges) to ensure tight tolerances.
• Strong understanding of various metals, alloys, and plastics, and their machining characteristics.
• Proven problem-solving skills for diagnosing, repairing, and optimizing tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures.

Bonus Qualifications

• Proficiency in CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, Mastercam).
• Experience with advanced metrology equipment (e.g., CMM, optical comparators).
• Knowledge of various heat treatment processes for tool steels.
• Experience with EDM or Wire EDM operations.
• Ability to program and troubleshoot CNC machining centers.
